Biography

Samtani Anil is the Deputy Director of CAPTEL. He is an Associate Professor of Law in the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He has been admitted to the Roll of Advocates and Solicitors in Singapore and to the Roll of Solicitors in England and Wales. Prof Samtani specializes in the areas of electronic commerce law, information technology law, intellectual property law and international business law.

 

Prof Samtani is a recipient of several awards and scholarships. He has recently been awarded the 2001 US Fulbright Scholarship by the Fulbright Commission, the US Department of State and the Centre for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES). He has also been appointed as a Visiting Scholar to the Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California at Berkeley (2001/2002). His past awards include the National University of Singapore and the Hokkien Huay Kuan Foundation Scholarships and the Honda Motor Company’s Japan IATSS Forum award.

 

Prof Samtani is an advisor to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). He is also listed in the roster of experts of the WIPO Worldwide Academy. Prof Samtani has also been appointed as the Chair of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN)’s Membership Implementation Task Force for East Asia and sits on the overall steering committee of ICANN’s Membership Implementation Task Force.

 

Prof Samtani has been consulted by and continues to advise the governments of Singapore, Thailand, Japan, India and the Philippines and several research institutes and international organizations on issues pertaining to the law and regulation of technology, electronic commerce and intellectual property rights. Prof Samtani is involved in projects carried out or funded by organizations such as UNICEF, UNESCO, the European Institute for the Media, the Yale Law School Information Society Project, the New York Law School Communications Media Center and the Asia Media Information and Communication Centre. Prof Samtani is also currently an Editor of the International Journal of Communications Law and Policy (a joint project of Yale University, Oxford University, University of Munster and the University of Warwick). Prof Samtani also speaks regularly at international conferences and is a prolific writer whose articles have appeared in internationally refereed law and business journals worldwide.
